If you haven't noticed, there is no newbie buff, no newbie ss/sps guest, no free soe to giran quest (so you can't beg for adena there until some lvl ), etc etc etc I think it's hardcore enough for newbies. 

The exp rate isn't really that high as it might look when you're killing gremlins, wait for higher lvl to see how hard you emorage because of lost % when some russian/brazilian peasant just comes by and PKs you for no reason (probably because he was beaten by his parents or bullied at school that day)...
